Response Team

We work directly with school districts and administrators to advocate on behalf of LGBTQIA2S+ youth to ensure their school campus is safe and supportive. We work with students, schools, teachers, parents, families, and guardians to effectively address issues of bullying, discrimination, or biased curriculum or instruction in K-12 schools. We also work with LGBTQIA2S+ and allied teachers who face discrimination or hostile work environments in their schools due to their LGBTQIA2S+ identities or inclusive curriculum.

Our Response Team is led by our Director, Ron Indra, who has thirty-five years of experience teaching in Santa Cruz where he was also a GSA advisor and a teacher’s union representative, allowing him to work in partnership with our local schools and districts.

Districts want to help students in crisis, but sometimes they don’t know what to do. We provide guidance on the rights of students and best practices in supporting LGBTQIA2S+ youth and ensure schools understand their legal responsibilities to protect all youth.

If you are a student experiencing bullying or discrimination on your school campus, or are a parent or guardian looking for support in addressing the bullying or discrimination happening at your child’s school, contact us today.

The Safe Schools Project also works to prevent crisis situations through professional development and learning opportunities for school staff, including teachers, administrators, counselors, and mental health support staff.
