Queer Zines: History and Creation

About the Workshop

Presenters: Lyra McKelvey (she/her)

Youth Led

Level: Beginning

For: Both middle and high school students

Description: In this workshop I will be leading an interactive lecture about zine history, especially queer zines and queer zine creators. For example, Allen Ginsberg, a gay poet, made poetry chapbooks that discussed his life experiences as a gay man during the political climate of the 1940s. The workshop will end with a zine making activity that anyone is free to participate in. Zines, due to their fluid definition, medium, and accessibility of materials, were popularized by marginalized groups.

About the Presenters

Lyra (LEER-uh) McKelvey (she/her) is a senior at Kirby School, and has been there since 6th grade. Her favorite classes are art, computer science, and Latin. She plans to major in game art. Lyra is currently working on three different illustration fanzines, and has applied to two others. One of these zines focuses on drawing characters from a comic as transfeminine–the working title is Girlzine
